A stable income is essential for any parent.
Where there’s a family to feed, leaving a comfortable, regular salaried office 9 to 5 to start scrapping around the work-from-home-job market is a step too far for most sane-minded people.
However, for many of us the lure of the work-life balance remains.
Rather than waste 2 hours in a commute every day, we want to spend that time with our kids.
How can you go about doing that, while still earning enough money to sustain your comfortable standard of living?
It is more than possible.
As I explained here; there are a ton of legitimate remote working opportunities available, if you know where to look.
Furthermore, as the list below shows, not only are there good career prospects for those that want flexibility at work, there’s also some damn fine salaries available to boot.
More and more big businesses are offering work-from-home options, and as my research shows, you could make upwards of six figures in some of these roles.
More than enough to pay the mortgage.
So are you ready to change your life?
Good, let’s get to it.
About the jobs on this list
From a database of several 1000 remote job listings (as of Feb 2018) I whittled down the number by salary filter, to show the legitimate offerings that pay $100,000 or more per annum.
Each job title listed offers some level of telecommuting; be it 100%, partial telecommuting, or the option to telecommute.
Clearly being 6 figure salary jobs these are not entry level positions.
However, if you have the relevant experience or work in a similar role in-house, some of these listings may give you the inspiration to make the leap.
It’s time to be there for your son’s basketball match.
A well paid, work-life balance awaits.
1. Senior Software Engineer
First we head to the tech sector with software engineering.
If you work in this field you will already know that software developers and engineers are in high demand.
If you have up to date programming skills, there is a lot of opportunity for you to work from home.
The job is easily carried out remotely and an increasing number of companies view telecommuting as way to retain talented employees.
If you have proven skills in Java, C#, SQL and other Web and software development scripts, alongside sufficient experience to be eligible for a senior position, you will be able to find remote positions that pay over $100,000 a year.
The freelance market place for software engineers is also lucrative and has a lot of work-from-home contract opportunities.
2. Senior Business Analyst
A senior business is one of the roles that is difficult to understand unless you do it.
And no offence to anyone that does this for a career, (why should you care what I think; you can command a salary of over 100,000 and work from home), but I imagine it being a conversation non-starter at dinner parties.
The top Google search for ‘what does a business analyst do’ has this to say:
Well that’s cleared that up.
All the same, remote jobs do exist in this area and they are very well paid.
If you have experience as a business analyst and want to work from home, there are opportunities out there.
However, the senior position normally requires team management skills, so many of the jobs listed are only partially remote.
3. Qualitative UX researcher
Pay: $100,000 to $120,000
User Experience (UX) is a big deal these days.
If you have experience in the sector you will be used to an abundance of job openings, and generous rates of pay.
The high demand for skilled personnel also has another benefit; employers are open to a remote arrangement in order to fill the roles.
So what does a Qualitative UX Researcher do?
Well they like data for a start. It is their job to conduct data-driven research that adds context and insight into a design process.
Whether a new piece of software or a toaster, the role exists to validate new product designs (from a user experience perspective) before they hit the market.
Part of the job involves planning and carrying out user interviews and surveys to inform product work, analyzing and reporting back data to design teams, as well as establishing and managing relationships with research related vendors.
4. Account Executive
Pay: $100,000 +
An Account Executive is a fancy term for the most senior sales person at the company.
They are responsible for maintaining current business relationships while at the same time seeking to build new ones in order to make sales.
The great thing is, if you have proven experience in this area you can add flexibility to the role if you hit the job boards.
Remote positions exist that pay over $100,000 before commissions.
In a remote arrangement, the executive would need to research, identify and generate new business via the phone, web as well as by on site visits.
This means some travel and client facing would be necessary, (so don’t go packing the suits away yet).
Other responsibilities include managing sales funnels, generating reports, troubleshooting and evaluating client needs.[thrive_leads id=’439′]
5. Financial Advisor
Pay: $100,000 to $120,000
Working as a financial planner or advisor is another high-paying career that can be carried out remotely.
Not only can a financial advisor conduct the nuts and bolts of their work at home, they can also get out of the house with the many client meetings that take place.
Whether you work in the capacity as an employee, or set yourself up as a self-employed, income in this field regularly tops $100,000, (source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).
6. Senior Medical Director
Another senior management role that I have seen offered under a flexible arrangement is a Medical Director.
A candidate here would have a proven history working with medical facilities and medical education organizations at a top level.
Charged with overseeing the strategic development and oversight for a specific department or area of medicine, one would have to have taken a very specific career path to be eligible for such a role.
However, if that’s you and you are looking to strike a balance between work and home life, there are remote opportunities out there.
Pay: up to $100,000
A utilization manager is another role in the medical sector that has well paid remote opportunities, (however in my research the salary did peak at $100,000, the average being closer to $80,000).
I will turn to the experts when it comes to clarifying what the UM position entails:
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) Committee on Utilization Management by Third Parties recognizes UM as “a set of techniques used by or on behalf of purchasers of health care benefits to manage health care costs by influencing patient care decision-making through case-by-case assessments of the appropriateness of care prior to its provision.“
Yep, doesn’t mean much to me either.
However, if the role speaks to you it is time to start looking, (or retraining); I came across a number of Utilization Manager openings that offered flexible working arrangements.
8. Senior iOS / Android developer
Pay: $130,000 to $160,000
Back to the tech sector with cell phone operating systems.
We all carry one around, and demand is high for those that can create apps for them.
If you know your way around iOS and Android and have project management experience bringing new apps to market, a remote senior role is out there for you.
To work within the Apple ecosystem it is important that you are familiar with technologies such as Core Data, GCD, Xcode Workspaces and Frameworks.
Android development on the other hand is mostly done using Java.
Quora has some interesting comments on what it takes to be a senior IOS developer, and the career stages to get there.
9. Senior Accountant
With the relevant qualifications and experience the role of a work from home senior accountant could be yours.
At a senior level you will no longer be dealing with administrative tasks such as data gathering and balance sheet population. This is the domain of the junior accountant.
The senior role is responsible for reporting costs, productivity, margins and expenditures.
This could be in-house for a large organization, that within the right company would allow for a partially remote working arrangement.
Alternatively, you could start your own accounting business.
The same responsibilities would then apply to a range of companies depending on your client list.
And of course, as a self employed accountant you can operate your business from home with little overhead, (and more family time).
10. Public Relations Director
Here’s an interesting one.
Why not become a Public Relations Director to seek the work life balance and command over $100,000 a year.
According to a 2008 survey of Public Relations Society of America members, the average annual income of freelance public relations professionals was approximately $104,000. And that was 10 years ago.
The basis of the position is to help corporations and nonprofit organizations carry out and measure the public perception of campaigns.
The job is varied to say the least.
From drafting news releases, writing speeches for executive staff, creating and executing social media strategies and dealing with journalists; it is clear that to be good at the role you need to be a successful communicator.
Under different circumstances, it is a career I wouldn’t mind having myself.
Those that already work in the sector have gone on to create their own home-based firms or arranged telecommuting options with their current employers.
And there you have it, a list of 10 careers that have work at home opportunities paying over $100,000 a year.
Do you already work in one of those fields and have some insider info? Or are you currently looking into working from home and have some questions.
Or maybe you just want to say hi.
Either way, I would love to hear from you in the message section below.
